Djammin

Role:

A bit of everything

Autumn 2023 - Spring 2024

Project Goals: Explore how musicians from diverse backgrounds engage with jamming, and identify ways to make the DJaminn app more intuitive and creatively supportive.

Research Question: How do experienced and new musicians—from classical to pop—navigate and understand the jamming process in DJaminn during their first-time experience?

Team members: 2, including a UI Designer and a UX Researcher.

Problem deliverables:

Heuristic evaluation — Usability testing with experienced and new musicians (classical and pop) — Storytelling workshop — UX insights — Refined UI prototype

Initial Planning

EndGoal:

1. Evaluation of the current interface from our own cultural perspective (Asia Pacific).

2. Providing simplification suggestions.

Detailed Heuristic Evaluation

  • We created a comprehensive audit report, identifying issues on each interface page during our trial run.

Interview + Usability test

  • The user interviews were composed of two parts. First, we explored each musician’s background—discussing their experience with music, collaboration, and creative habits.

  • In the second part, participants—who were all first-time users—were asked to test the app while thinking aloud, allowing us to observe their real-time reactions and pain points during key tasks.

  • These targeted usability tasks included:

Workshop

undefined

  • The workshop aimed to observe how musicians, including singers and classical players, engage in jamming and collaboration in real time Through storytelling sessions, participants shared personal and cultural experiences that revealed deeper creative motivations. Collaborative co-design activities helped gather insights to improve DJaminn’s support for diverse, intuitive music-making.

Insights

Two key themes emerged: [1] jamming and [2] jamming with others. This highlighted two important points:

  • jamming requires a simple setup and a screening of users’ expertise levels, since traditional musicians are often hesitant to jam with beginners

  • the community aspect needs improvement to foster better collaboration. Based on these insights, we created a flowchart to visualize and address these challenges.

Prototyping

  • After gathering these insights, we made simple changes to the prototypes.

  • The current prototype serves as a demonstration of our improvements and design direction.
